Additionally, if you use a lower quality bench and have items like an entertainment center sitting on them, they will sag over time. Do you work hard all day but have trouble shutting your mind off at night when you should be sleeping? Are you doing instant replay of millions of thoughts and things that happened throughout your day? Or, are you worried about something that will happen down the road to yourself, one of your children, a parent or a friend and you just can’t go to sleep?

One of the most frustrating things for people is to be very tired from a long day filled with many activities and facing many issues yet sleep eludes them. If this is you, is it possible that you have created a bedroom that is not conducive to rest, relaxation and sleep?

Plan Now for Sleep Later

During the planning or house buying stage, little thought is given to the location of a bedroom to say nothing about whether it is designed for its primary function, rest and relaxation. Is your bedroom in the front of the house or securely tucked away from traffic and noise on the side or in the back of the house? Is your bedroom next to the kitchen or the family room where family activities will continually interrupt your rest? Does your bedroom have an outside sliding or French door that is not securely locked and causing your subconscious mind great stress at night when you are so vulnerable?

Any or all of the above are a frequent challenge when dealing with clients that have great difficulty getting adequate rest so they can be refreshed and start their day anew. There are a few very good basic Feng Shui principles you can follow that will in many cases dramatically increase your ability to get a good night’s sleep.

Three Steps to Better Sleep

First, make sure the room is clutter free. Any clutter serves as a reminder of “things not completed, or holding onto the past”. Clutter serves to block new positive energy from entering your bedroom. By the way, clutter does include stacks of magazines, books and laundry. Remember to look under your bed. Nothing should be stored under the bed. Those items prevent positive regenerating energy from circulating completely around your body at night while sleeping. Also, if there are items with jagged edges poking upward, they are directing negative energy toward your body creating unrest and discomfort.

Second, make sure the bedroom walls are painted a very neutral or pastel color. Those colors are very soothing to the eyes and mind creating a somewhat tranquil room energy whereas bold and brighter colors are very energy active. The color should be light and soft although not white. Peach tones and warm taupe are great bedroom colors although pastel green in any shade as long as it is light and a very soft blue can also be used successfully. Blue can be a very cold color so if you choose to use it, make sure it is not the hard steel blue version. To slightly energize a pastel color use brightly colored pillows and throws that you remove from the bed at night.

Finally, check the linens, table top accessories and wall décor to make sure they are peaceful colors or depicting peaceful nurturing scenes. Bright colored patchwork quilts, action oriented wall art and angular metal objects and lamps are all energizing colors, shapes and materials. For maximum rest the room needs to be filled with peaceful energy. The linens should reflect the softness of the walls in color and value. The pictures on the walls should definitely be quieting and peaceful in nature.

A word of caution about electronic equipment; many people choose to put computers, televisions and other electronic equipment into their bedrooms. All electronic equipment is filled with energy and gathers additional energy all day long. If possible, remove all electronic equipment from your bedroom. If you love to watch television while in bed, place the television into a cabinet with doors and close the doors when you end your night viewing. If you do not have a cabinet or cannot put one into your bedroom, at minimum toss a lovely scarf or throw over the television to provide you some protection from the energized electronic activity.

Your bedroom should now be prepared for total rest and relaxation necessary for a good nights sleep. The bedroom needs to be a sanctuary from all the day’s activities and world events. By providing yourself just such a sanctuary you will find it much easier to fall asleep when you are ready and rest more soundly while sleeping.

Set a timer. Kids love to play games and if cleaning a bedroom is turned into a game the chore is so much more fun. Depending on how messy your child’s bedroom is set a time for anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes. More than 10 minutes and you run the risk of your child loosing focus.

Once the timer is set your child then races against the time to clean the bedroom before the buzzer goes off. If you want to add in a bit of extra incentive you can tie a prize to the game.

Hide money. Try hiding coins pennies, dimes, nickels or quarters around the room and under items that need to be cleaned. Your child then has to try and find all the coins you have hidden around the room.

The catch is every time your child picks up something to look under it for a coin he has to put that item away. The incentive here is that your child gets to keep all the hidden coins after the bedroom is cleaned.

By making a game of cleaning your child’s bedroom the chore becomes fun. It all goes back to what Mary Poppins said: “Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.”

Arranging your bedroom furniture according to Feng Shui

The bedroom is one of the most important considerations when it comes to Feng Shui. We spend almost a third of our lives in our bedroom and it should be an environment that makes us feel safe, secure and relaxed. Family rooms, kitchens and playrooms are active spaces associated with the Yang force, while bedrooms need to be more Yin and relaxing.

Your main bedroom should be situated as far away from the front door as possible to give you a feeling of protection, stability and security. If there is an adjacent toilet or bathroom, the door to it should be closed while you are asleep. Any sharp edges such as the edges of bedroom furniture should be rounded off or softened by covering them. Computers, radios, televisions and even mobile phone chargers should be positioned as far away from where you sleep as possible to avoid disturbance from electrical currents.

The South West section of your bedroom is said to relate to your relationships, so you should avoid putting your dirty linen basket here! Instead place a photograph of you and your partner or a symbol of your happiness on the wall in this area. You can create a warm, romantic atmosphere in your bedroom through the use of soft lighting or candlelight.

How you decorate your bedroom is of course down to personal taste, but there are some Feng Shui guidelines on colour. Green is a good choice, as it can have a calming effect, while blue is relaxing but a little too cool. Yellow stimulates the mind, which sounds good but might also keep you awake at night. Positioning your bed

Make sure the bed is stable, as this is thought to bring stability into your life. The bed needs a strong headboard to protect your Chi while you sleep, and you should not sleep with your head facing an open window, as this will drain away your Chi. Sleeping on the floor is not advisable either, as this does not allow Chi to circulate below you.

Remember that there are many different types of beds too, and do some homework before you choose. Many of the different types of bed are actually a different type of mattress. An air bed for example is in fact an air mattress, or simply a mattress filled with air instead of springs or some other type of material. The amount of air, or the softness of the mattress can be controlled by the user to produce a mattress that is adjusted perfectly for their requirements.

Similarly a water bed is a bed with a mattress filled with water. The author can testify to how good a good water bed can be, he used a water bed for some years and it produced probably the most comfortable sleep possible.

Or you could just go for a platform bed. This is pretty much as it’s described. A platform on which is placed the mattress of your choice. So all you need to do is to decide on the mattress, and you’ve got yourself a bed. A platform bed is often used in conjunction with a futon mattress.

So when it comes to selecting the bed for the bedroom remember you have to make a number of choices. You need to select the look and style of the bed you want as well as the type of bed from a comfort point of view. And if you’re going for a regular mattress, instead of, say an air or water bed type of mattress, you then need to research some of the different considerations for buying a mattress.

So there’s a lot to think of when it comes to buying a bed. But remember, the bed you choose is a critical part of the bedroom decoration process, and one of the first things you should decide on. Everything else flows from your choice of bed.
